Contempt of Court
Contempt of court is willful disobedience of a valid court order with knowledge of the order and the ability to comply. Contempt can also be imposed for any misconduct in the presence of a court that interferes with the Court's ability to perform its functions or a conduct which insults the court.
Nature
A contempt action to enforce civil judgments is classified as "quasi-criminal" in nature giving the non-moving party some constitutional rights of a criminally accused.
Types of Orders enforceable by contempt
Child, spousal and family support orders are enforceable by contempt.
Child custody and visitation orders are also enforceable by contempt.
Punishment
Contempt is punishable by fine or imprisonment or both.
